During our yoga classes we usually start our practice with Sun Salutation, known in Sanskrit as Surya Namaskar (pronounced Sir-yah- Namah-skar). Surya means sun and Namaskar means greeting or to bow. With this practice we celebrate the sun and its life giving properties. In Hindu philosophy, the sun is considered the giver of life to all life forms on this earth. Just like the sun we are beings of light and a daily practice of sun salutations enhances our connection with this light leading to greater wellness within.
Sun Salutation is a sequence of yoga poses (asanas) that can help strengthen your various muscle groups, while also helping you focus on your breathing and improve your circulation for a healthier life. Sun Salutations have been described as the most complete mental and physical exercise available. Sun salutations will stretch your hamstrings, build core strength and lift your chest to enhance your breathing. The most common variations of the practice are Sun Salutation A & B.
Here are some of the benefits of a daily Sun Salutation practice:
If you don't feel you have time for a full yoga practice session then a few rounds of sun salutations in the morning is a great way to begin. A daily practice will help you to maintain flexibility, strength and grace as well as reducing stress and anxiety. So it is an ideal way of getting a good overall body stretch in a short amount of time, not to mention all the other benefits above!
